Avon Books is an imprint of HarperCollins Publishers that publishes romance novels. Known for pioneering historical romance, Avon books appeal to all kinds of readers. They are available in paperbacks and e-books. Avon’s romance books are a hit among adults and teens.
Avon was founded as a paperback book publisher in 1941, but quickly grew into a competitor to Pocket Books. History
In the beginning of Avon Publications, the company was primarily focused on paperback novels. It was established in 1941 by the American News Company to create an alternative to Pocket Books, which published the dime novel. The ANC hired brothers and sisters Joseph Meyers and Edna Meyers Williams to establish the new company. Meyers distinguished Avon from its rivals by focusing on the popularity of Avon’s books rather than higher-level literary concepts. The first Avons looked like Pocket Books, however Meyers made it a point of highlighting their popularity.
Avon launched a line digest-format paperbacks, including Modern Short Story Monthly or avon book October 2023 Fantasy Reader. It also published several volumes by authors highly prized by present-day collectors. Avon began to focus on romance in the late 1970s as various romance books were able to reach and maintain positions on bestseller lists. The Avon Historical Society has an extensive collection of more than 1,000 items which includes the original Avon Books that have been digitally scanned and are accessible online. The Avon Books Collection (Collection Number 427) was begun in earnest by Special Collections in 1960, shortly after the Hearst Corporation took over the Avon imprint. The collection was expanded through 1969 by titles acquired from other sources, partly with the help of the publishers.
